El Rio Healthcare UX Strategy & Website

Accessible, Human-Centered Healthcare

This project, as a part of Hydrant, was special to me. I saw it as an opportunity to help people on a scale I’d not known before with the tools at my disposal: design.

Everyone knows that navigating the American healthcare system can be a nightmare. So when approaching the UX for this project, I wanted to ensure each person who came to the El Rio website would be able to get the information that they needed in 3 clicks or less.

Also a part of this project was a photoshoot, allowing the images that El Rio uses from this point forward to feel centered around the Tucson community.

Individuals seeking accessible, trustworthy healthcare for the first time. Their priority is finding clear information about services, locations, find a provider, and register for services.

Patients familiar with El Rio’s care who need quick access to medical services and to find potential providers.

People exploring job opportunities, drawn to El Rio’s community-driven mission and seeking a clear view of career paths and workplace culture.

Community members eager to make an impact, looking for transparent details about El Rio’s initiatives and how their contributions benefit the community.

Custom Icons

El Rio’s network serves all of Pima County with 15 locations and offers a thorough suite of medical and dental services, including specialty services such as midwifery and transgender medicine. Part of our strategy to efficiently and clearly communicate all of these services on the website involved creating a collection of custom, modernized icons.

Post Photoshoot Image Processing

The new photo library required us to capture all locations and services in action. We used multiple models in each service to account for diversity and representation.

After the photoshoot of the locations and services was completed by Molly Condit, I spent a significant amount of time with the raw photos, editing them to ensure that El Rio had a gallery of images at their disposal that were thoughtfully touched up to ensure a bright friendly mood was conveyed.

The Website

The El Rio website itself was a welcoming UX challenge. It’s nota secret that the healthcare system can be difficult and stressful to navigate. Working on this website was an opportunity for us to tackle a national problem on a local scale. By approaching this problem with empathy, comprehensive UX strategy, and true collaboration with the El Rio team, I was able to create a modern and elegant website that answers the needs of all those that El Rio helps.
